Thanks for the update Bubsy. My wife and I just got back from Europe and your comment made me realize we did not get this week's Forest Hill Ledger with our other mail. Windsor I, and the speculators who bought apartments to flip them, seem to be having marketing difficulties in selling the remaining apartments. This makes it a bit surprising that Cord Meyer is proceeding with Windsor II. I guess the numbers work for them. |

re: Windsor II This weeks Forest Hills Ledger has a story about the proposed high rise that Cord Meyer is planning to build above Key Food on Queens Blvd that many here once referred to as "Windsor II". In the story it states that Community Board 6 received absolutely no complaints about the construction of the original Windsor. I'm puzzled. On this message board, people were yelling and screaming and complaining about work done at illegal hours, about an adjacent building that was damaged by the construction, yet not one person ever filed a complaint with the Community Board? Either the head of the Community Board is lying or the people on this Board have big mouths but don't take the steps required to solve their issues. What's up with this? |

BASEMENT WINDOW REPAIR A glass slat in my jealousy basement window broke and the window mechanism itself is rusting, brittle and falling apart. I think it dates back to the 1950's. Anyone know where I can, first, get a replacement slat for the window and get an estimate as to what it would cost to repair and/or replace that window mechanism or all the windows in the basement? Thanks, |

May 20 and 27 at 9:30 am there is a volunteer graffiti clean up. If you would like to help meet at the 112th Precinct on those days, or call 718-520-9321 for more information. I don't have any other info I just read about this in a newsletter. Unfortunately I will not be available to assist on these two days. |

I've noticed a major increase in graffiti in Forest Hills lately. Anyone who walks down Metropolitan Avenue or Austin Street before the stores are open can see what I mean. Also, garage doors are "tagged" with graffiti in "The Valley" the area around 110th St on the North Side of Queens Blvd. near the LIE. There is also graffiti on the businesses on 69th Ave between Groton and Harrow. From what I see, the graffiti is simply "tagging" and not related to any "gang" involvement. But still, it affects the community. I hope that those in the respective areas will take some action. |

Does anyone know of a low cost frame store in the area? I once purchased a work of art and got it framed at Art World. Their work was impeccable and certainly worth the price given the price of the art. But I have a couple of items that I won in the Fortune Society Auction that I would like to have framed. |

Re: The Neighborhood I am very concerned about the potential impact of a new business on The Neighborhood. The new owner of King David, who merged with the antique shop next door, is opening a huge business and I was told that it will be a rowdy nightclub and perhaps a Russian stripclub. I think they only have a permit for a restaurant... there is a similar business on 108th Street and the people who live there are made miserable by it. Is there any recourse to prevent this from happening? There is also a school nearby so it's totally inappropriate. |

Is there another McDonald's near here besides the one on 71st and Austin. That place really creeps me out, but sometimes I just crave McDonald's fries. Why is that McDonalds the defacto senior center and all day hang out for strange people from all the surrounding communities? |

Road Repaving Can the Forest Hills Gardens Association use some of their funds soon to repave the streets in the gardens that are seriously in need of repair? The Gardens is a really nice place to bike ride, but some streets, )Greenway North and Greenway South come immediately to mind) are so full of ridges and potholes it's downright dangerous. The City has been paving several of the streets just outside the Gardens recently. It's ashamed seeing such lovely homes with so beat up streets. |

You can take a Northbound Q23 bus at the corner of Metropolitan and 71st Ave. It will go under the LIRR at Yellowstone Blvd and then run up Autin street until 71st. On Saturdays and Sundays they run about every 15 minutes. During the week, it's more frequent. |

re: Cohens I lived in Forest Hills for 16 years and tried most of the chains and local opticians. I found Dr. Soren and the people at Forest Hills Opticians 69-39 Austin St by far the best. I've also had decent service from Mitch at Eye Q Optical. |

When I first moved in to Forest Hills I went to Cohens to order a pair of glasses - progressive lenses. I had to go back with them three times until they got it right, and each time they argued with me that the RX was what it should be. I'll never use Cohens, or for that matter any of the big chains, because they don't seem to care about quality - only about getting the most money for the least amount of effort. |

Denise, If you were paying them to adjust your glasses and they broke them, they are responsible for repairs. If you weren't paying them, they might be responsible, it depends on the services they offer. Either way, I'm assuming your glasses are under $1000, you can file a suit in small claims court. Most likely they will settle with you instead of spending a day in court. Small claims court is designed for this, you don't need a lawyer, you just need to fill out paperwork, pay a small fee and appear in front of a judge. Now, if they do fix it and try to charge you for it, make sure to put it on a credit card, you will have a record of the transaction and possibly the evidence you need to win your case. |

Denise, I had a similar "bad experience" just yesterday at Cohen's. I had called the previous night to re order my contacts and I was told they would not re order them without me getting another eye exam. Ok, I than asked the cost he told me it would be $154 total. After getting my eyes examined the lady behind the counter pulls out some frames for me to try on. I said that I am not here to buy glasses just to get my lenses. Than she proceeded to say "Let's just play " to see what looks good on you". I said I didnt have time than she apologized. When she told me by total bill was $164 I said that I had called the night before and was told 154. She sail"Well I wasn't here, who did you talk to" After speaking to the owner he said prices went up, I said overnight. Well you better inform your staff than but he did give it to me for 154 however, like you said that he was doing me a favor. When I asked him When my lenses would be in, his rude response to me was "What are you worried about I gave you a trial pair". I left there so aggravated and I want to get in touch with there corporate headquarters to complain. They should be happy to get our business instead of talking down . THAT IS THE LAST TIME I GO TO COHENS. |

About Cohen's Fashion Optical: Thanks. I did do some research on the internet. In NYC, if you got a service complaint or you ever need this, you can go to http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/home.html, or just simply call 311 to do so. I haven't do such things because I'll wait til my glasses come back. I did have some good experiences with other optical stores. I understand that it might be an accident, and Cohen's might not be responsible for the breakage. But, their attitude made me feel that they just wanted me to spend money in their store. |

I had two positive experiences with Cohen's last year. One was to adjust a pair of glasses which they did for free and were very nice about it. They also did a driver's eye test for someone and couldn't have been nicer about it and didn't try to push any sales on us. Maybe it was really an accident, and they are not responsible for breakage. Sol Moscot is also very nice and do things like that for free too. |

This happened to me today. I went to Cohan's Fashion Optical, the one around the corner of Austin and 71 Ave, around 6 pm to get my eyewear adjusted. Instead of getting adjusted, this so called professional lady broke my eyewear, one side of the nose holder was broken. "Ooops! I broke it." she said it like it's some kind of joke. She then asked me "when was the last time you had the eye exam?" It was so weird so my mind went blank. What kind of question is that? She even told me that "you can get 50% off if you want a new frame." Since she could do nothing about it, she asked the owner to come by. The owner told me it's not their responsipility because I did not purchase this eyewear from them. I said to the owner that the lady already knew this before she took my glass and tried to fix my eyewear. Now she took it and broke it; it seemed the owner didn't want to take any responsibility of it. Then the owner looked at my glasses, and said "Sweetie, it's an old frame," which I only had it for 6 months. "I can get you a new one for 50% off, sweetie." the owner then added. Through out the whole conversation with them, I did not hear any apology from them about breaking my eyewear, nor see any sign they try to apology. Their attitude were so bad, and I felt it's my fault to bring my glasses there and ask them to adjust it; they're just "doing me a favor" as the owner said. Despite that lady's bad attitude and owner's "sweetie" me, I left my eyewear there. They said they'll try to fix it and come back in 2 days. We'll see. p.s Guess I could only wish that if I were rich enough, I would just simply call my lawyer, and leave this mess to my lawyer taking care of... no need to hear someone call me "sweetie" when they should address me respectfully by "miss" or "lady"... sigh, only if I were rich. |

Sunday Times Article Today's Sunday times has an article on Forest Hills businesses along Metropolitan Ave. I found it interesting, expecially the fact that stores that rented on Austin street feared being forced out by ever rising rents so they purchased properties on Metropolitan Ave and continue to have thriving businesses without worries of having to deal with greedy landlords. You can read it online (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/19/realestate/19sqft.html?) or it's in today's real estate section. |

to Anon120 Sorry to hear that. I've never gone there but whenever I've passed by everyone seemed to be having a good time. Hopefully, the stables wont be next, or even worse, housing in Forest Park? |

The Forest Hills Country Club II is gone. It is history. It has been torn down in favor of new housing. The rumor has it that they are going to build 30 to 40 new 2 family homes. I know I am going to miss the pool club immensely this summer. I guess money is all that matters nowaday. It is such a shame. I was hoping that something would have happened to change their minds but I guess it is real for now. I know I will miss it terribly,, good times with good friends and family in a safe, fun and convenient place. |

Forest Hills Country Club II Question... What is happening with the FH Country Club II? I passed by today on my bike and I saw that it has been completely demolished. Is it gone or being remodeled? |

To Vivian Fernandez: The Forest Hills Inn is managed by Kaled Management. If you are interested in an apartment in it you can call Debbie Gordon at (516) 876-4800. I lived in another Kaled building (Majestic) for 16 years and I found it well managed. Debbie Gordon was always accessible and I found that she really listened. But there have been several posts here regarding the Forest Hills Inn that are very negative. Even if you decide against the Forest Hills Inn, you might inquire if there is a vacancy in one of their other Forest Hills buidlings. |

Hi Everyone, Am looking to buy an apartment in Forest Hills. Saw a lovely place in the FOrest Hills Inn which I made an offer on, but the owner picked someone else She mentioned that the president of the coop board owns many apartments in the building himself. I'm thinking of dropping him a line to see if anything else in there is available but I can't find him & the owner won't return my calls-maybe she thinks I am going to try to talk her out of her decision LOL! ANY help would be deeply appreciated, please email. Thank you! |

Remember Laurie Bohm? Kenny Corbin? Robbie Katz? The Bonelli twins? Crazy times hanging out on the steps of the LIRR. I remember with Paul Kurtz got caught shoplifting at Woolworth's. |

Does anyone remember The Record Joint, Joel Morton's, when the candy store by the LIRR was Kewies (Cooies)? Ultimate frisbee in the 101 schoolyard at night? How about Tom Smith, Fabiana, Dana and Jeff, Jerry Roy, Adriana Gulotta, Sonjia? Just a few names I haven't heard anything about in YEARS. I was wondering who was posting here - so I've just covered several groups, and years, by asking about the above. |

Forest Hills here I come. Hello all. I'm a 21 year-old girl from Manhattan who's moving away from Herald Square and into Forest Hills. What's good around there? I mean I've been reading about it for the larger part of the day and i can't really seem to find alot of info. Are there a lot of younger people in the area? Good night spots? Good shopping and food? Someone let me know what's going on because i don't want to be thrust into a new place without a bit of background. |

More Store Closings... I see that the Donut Store on the North Side of Queens Blvd near 76th and the Hagan Daz next door both have "For Rent" signs in the window. In this day when the economy is supposedly "booming" why are there so many stores closing in Forest Hills? |

On a nicer note, yesterday I was on Austin Street and thought it was just wonderful that the Forest Hills Merchant Association stores were participating in Halloweeen, and most of them had candy for the children. It was also great to see the little trick or treaters, of every race, speaking every language with their parents, all joining in one of our most fun American holidays. |

Anon, schizophrenia usually occurs in people in their 20s and 30s. Antipsychotic drugs can be used to reduce and lessen the chances symptoms will return. |

I had a family member who had cancer. To suggest that cancer and AIDS takes a back seat in level of destructiveness compared to 'schizophrenica', wow. Maybe as destructive as, certainly not less. |

Art - where near the Concourse did your grandmother live? My lived between Mount Eden and 170th Street. The Surrey Theatre was around the corner and there was a catering hall next door. The building across from her had a BEAUTIFUL front with steps going up either side and a giant planter in the center. That was between Hawkstone and Rockwood. I remember walking under Jerome Avenue after dinner but it was always depressing with all the used car lots even in the sixties. Mt. Eden had a park in the middle where people would sit - Thanks for the memories. |

Maxine: I know what you're talking about. My grandmother lived off the Concourse too. Her building had a great courtyard in the back that was bricked up due to crime. I actually remember being scared when I went to visit there. I recently took my mom and aunt to my old Pelham Parkway neighborhood and looked back with fondness-- the buildings look the same, albeit a bit rundown, but after being in FH, I realize the old areas shortcomings. The elevated subway makes the area look gloomy, the delis and restaurants are gone, and there are no movie houses. What a shame. I am glad that FH has all it does. |

Art -- I was born in Bronx Lebanon Hospital in the 60's and my grandmother lived on Walton Avenue off the Concourse from the 1920's through the 1970's. I too have many fond memories from the Bronx growing up and guess I'll just keep them in my mind as they were since I haven't been back in about 14 years. It's nice to remember things as they were sometimes -- it may not be a realistic view, but it gives you something to treasure. |

I know where Michelle is coming from. Obviously, she has been here longer than most of us and remembers fondly of the good old days. I moved here from the Bronx, because I too remember how great that neighborhood was. When I moved here (11 yrs ago) I remember talking to my neighbors about what a great neighborhood FH was. They told me that it was going down hill. What looks good to a newcomer doesnt seem so to a native. |

"You are not an asset to the community", and "Sad, because it suggests an inability to communicate". It seems to me the hostile ones are the ones typing in all caps. They are the ones who can't take criticism. It's bizarre to claim the ability to judge others as nasty and cruel just by reading their posts. Like I said, I'm Not Michelle but believe what you would like. It's just that these comments are coming from left field. Also, I don't say to my co-workers, "Oh my gawd, do you know what happened on foresthillsny.com last night!?!? Let's post on the same message board minutes from each other at 2am and 5am!" Again, notice the all caps and remarks from left field--from one crazy schizophrenic poster? |

Michelle-The general tone of all your posts' seem to be very negative and extremly harsh. That will never benefit you or anyone who happens to read them or moreover, the community.Pardon my humble opinion, but perhaps you would benefit from a yoga class or two at the new DAHN YOGA CENTER.It could really help and calm you.You just seem to come across as jaded nasty and cruel. I'm sure that your capeable of MORE than hurting other people, putting them down and making them feel badly about themselves. If someone has hurt you in the past,Try not to inflict that pain onto those in your present |

Michaelovethelaw Perhaps prospective store owners should do their reseach a little more carefully before opening their stores. Max's deli was not what I consider a Deli - and no I didn't eat there because it was not appealing. The Homestead was my home almost every night so don't tell me about not frequenting neighborhood businesses when I have been a resident for over 20 years. I also lived in Peter Pan, Hush-a- bye, King George, La Crepe, Pier One Imports, Selma Rose, Dave's, Beau Brummel, the Happy Cooker and all the other little stores that are now gone. Do you remember any of these? If I wanted to shop in a corporate chain store, I can go anywhere. My point is that Austin Street used to cater to a specific clientele and it worked. Why can't it happen again. |

However,it's apparent that some posters are intolerable of anyones critisims unless its thier own.Sad, because it suggests an inability to communicate.Stop belittling your own neighborhood, alittle more pride will help and try not to be so hostile!Think-More POSITIVE,More POLITE..More....FOREST HILLS.Sorry that I was working at this on Sat night and not getting drunk somewhere-That seemed to bother some people (: |
