Several weeks ago, Cafe Japon, one of my favorite Sashimi/Sushi restaurants closed. It recently reopened as "Midori Matsu" I went there today for Sashimi takeout. The restaurant itself is now modern. The first room is a sushi bar with booth seating, the second room is like Benehana of Tokyo with chefs preparing meat dishes at the tables. Unfortunately, my experience with Midori Matsu was nothing like Cafe Japon. Sashimi Regular now includes a salad, miso soup, white rice, and sashimi. When I got home, I had the miso soup (excellent), salad (mixed greens with a ginger dressing that would have been good if the ginger stayed mixed with the oil). Instead of chopsticks I got a tacky plastic spoon, fork, and knife remincent of KFC. Cafe Japon used to provide soy sauce in a small container (like the salad dressing container) which was convenient for mixing the soy sauce and wasabi. Midori had tacky plastic packets of "Low sodium soy sauce" that tasted awful. Come on now... miso soup is VERY high in sodium. Why bother with low sodium soy sauce that tastes awful? But the biggest problem was the sashimi. Every fish was extremely fishy! I've had sashimi in the US and in Japan, and once in awhile ONE fish might be slightly fishy. But EVERY fish?! So, no rice, no chopsticks, and fishy sashimi?. I would sadly recommend that people stay away from this place. My last meal at Narita wasn't up to what it used to be but was OK but in my opinion, not worth the money. Kyoto in Kew Gardens Hills on Union Tpk is excellent. Their prices are between Midori and Narita but certainly worth it. Has sushi/sashimi quality been slipping in general in NYC? |

Anyone know what is happening with Cafe Japon? They have excellent sushi and sashimi and parking is considerably easier than trying to park near Narita. But the phone just rings and rings, and when I passed by last night, the signs were taken down and the place looked like itwas being gutted. :-( |

It's funny, now the work at Meyers stopped. I haven't seen workmen in the afternoon anymore - well a diner would be good for the older crowd to have coffee and breakfast. |

There's a rumor that Meyers will be turned into a greek diner. The food will be ok, but they won't be open 24 hours and they'll eventually change owners several times and then go out of business. Some renovations may take place after that. Meyers is cyclical |

I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned Portofino's - a great Italian restaurant on the corner of Queens Blvd. and Ascan Ave. I take my whole family there for special occasions like birthdays, father's day, etc. |

Great neighborhood restaurant: Tu Casa on Metropolitan & Lefferts (it's new, it's very clean, it's very good) - a quaint latin restaurant serving roast chicken, rice and beans (nice avocado salad, too). Family run - food is very fresh. Can't beat it for an inexpensive and satisfying meal. Acquista Trattoria - on Union Turnpike in Fresh Meadows. Get in your car and go to this great little corner Italian trattoria. Great prices, great food. Two blocks from Utopia Parkway (across from St. Johns). Mood in Kew Gardens. The food is delicious, the style is Manhattan. Cabana - I've been to all four Cabana's in NY and Florida. Have never been disappointed. Order the Salmon with the fruit glaze over coconut rice (it's never on the menu, but is available every night). Enjoy! |

T-bone is a pretty good little diner. Everybody's knock against it seems to be how dirty it is but if you're going to go that way you might not want to eat out at all anymore. Every single place in FH (AND NYC for that matter) has bugs and/or rodents. I once shared a booth with a roach the size of a bagel at Austin house. I have had mice dart out from under my table at Uno's. I've also seen more roaches than I can count crawling around in front of Pinang late at night. I've even found roaches(plural) in the bottom of my delivery bag from Hang Shing on Metro. This stuff happens. If the food is good - and I've never gotten sick off of it - then I don't consider it a problem. I think everybody needs to grow up a little. |

I'm surprised in all this diner debate that no one mentioned the Forest Diner on 108th street. It's the only one I'll go to. All the rest in the area are disgusting- especially T-Bone. Also- Mickey's japanese is so over-rated and ugly as sin. I think Narita has much better sushi- especially the maguro and hamachi sushi plate. (tuna and yellowtail) mmmmm.... *Bann Thai vs. Q- Q is good if you want that romantic, let's pretend we're in Manhattan and sit on top of the next table. Bann Thai is way better over all, with much more variety and a really colorful atmosphere. Finally- Just Like Mother's has excellent pieroges, The Family Restaurant makes great chicken marsala...and Pinang is really good with a spare but funky atmosphere. Raj Gate- the year-old Indian place is too inconsistent- sometimes you get more oil swimming on top then anything else. grrr |

I am also a recent Queens convert, having moved from Williamsburg to Kew Gardens. While loving being in Queens, I too have found the Forest Hills restaurant scene to be lacking. But one exception I've found is Kyoto --a fantastic Japanese/Thai restaurant at Union Tpke & Parsons Blvd. The prices are exceptionally fair and the sushi is as good as it gets. Other than that, I generally venture out to Astoria or other surrounding areas, such as Crossbay Blvd for delicious and moderately priced meals. |

In response to anonymous from Carroll Gardens who moved here from Brooklyn, I hate to say it, but we GO to Brooklyn almost every time we dine out because there are so so many great places there! We have lived here almost 10 years and find most of the food to be below par, including some of the places you mentioned. We consider the trip to Brooklyn to be a mini adventure and honestly feel that the overall quality and diversity of choices is fantastic. As you know, it's only about a 25 minute drive, and even less to Williamsburg. Places that come to mind include SEA, Planet Thailand, Diner, Relish, Aurora and lots of places on Smith St. like Banania, Cafe Luluc, Savoia, etc. |

I've been living in Forest Hills for about 6 months now. Prior to that I too was in Brooklyn. I have to agree with you regarding the three places you mentioned. However I have found some others that you might want to try: 1) The Thai place all the way at the end of Austin (near Yellowstone). I've only been there once, but it was one the best meals I've had all year. 2) Cubana - They also have a Manhattan location. It's not cheap, but very good. 3) Nicks pizza - although many in the group would disagree, I find their thin crust pies excellent. 4) There is an Asian place on Queens Blvd, north of Ascan on the South side that's half Chinese half Japanese. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but they take the food pretty seriously inside. I think it's next to the Argentinian place. 5) Green Cactus Cafe: It took my a while to overcome the harsh lighting and actually enter this place, but once I did I was rewarded with the freshest tasting burrito I've ever had. I’ve also dined at places in Jackson Heights, Long Island City, Flushing, Sunnyside and Bayside. This borough has some amazing places to eat. |

My husband and I just moved to Forest Hills from Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, and we've found the restaurants here to be twice as expensive and not nearly as good! A few that come to mind are Rouge, Mardi Gras, and Q. At all of them, the food was decent but nothing special--and, had the entrees been, say, $10 or $12, I would happily return to all three. But for $20/entree, we expect something a little more special. Anyone know what the deal with the inflated restaurant prices is? Thanks. |

You had a REALLY different experience than I did. Dee's was packed when my wife and I were there - we were seated so close to the people next to us that we were practically on top of them - the food was borderline - and the heat from the ovens kept blowing on us, not good in July. I didn't like the original Dee's and this one sure as H E double hockey sticks didn't win me over. |

I was in Ohio last weekend and ate at some of the Amish places. For $21 for two people my wife and I had an all you can eat breakfast that was better than the area diners. And the dinner was $32 for two people with more food that we could eat. Wife and I ate at the Thai Pot last night and my wife said that they are already starting to cut corners because business is so good. |

Hmmm, It's interesting to hear about how much people like the diners in the neighborhood. Personally, I have found them pretty disappointing. I've tried the Georgia, Tower and T-Bone and that little one on Austin. The food just seemed mediocre at best. Maybe it's just what to expect from diner food - it's no better in most of Manhattan either. There is a great place in Astoria, however, called Cup Diner. Near the movie studio...they give you this huge cup of delicious coffee and the food is great. |

Hi there, Vandelay96! Thank you for your posting. It's good to hear from you. I hope you enjoy the other restaurants that I've mentioned as well in my last posting. I tried King David's a while back, when they were under different ownership, and the food was really great! Whenever I pass by, I still see a decent crowd. If you desire food on the order of restaurants i.e. "King David's," you may be interested in traveling to an Israeli/Persian restaurant in Kew Garden Hills called "Hapisgah" (my favorite!). Getting back to FH, besides Primadonna, another place you may enjoy is "Bellerose Pizza." Take advantage of their yummy pizza varieties & falafel, as well as the eggplant parmagian sandwich. On the S side of Qns Blvd bet. 66th RD & 67th Ave, there's a small, but great restaurant that's been there for several years, called "Evergreen." Check it out! You may not be living in that prime FH section, but if you like to walk, it's only minutes away. I believe walking is the healthiest form of exercise, & I am one for long walks. Some sections of Met Food should be cleaned up a bit, but the workers are courteous & accomodating, and there's a rather large selection of food. I also shop in Fruit Ranch which has a great variety of foods...imports, organic, good appetizing, etc. Thank you for telling me about the "new" diner. Btw, you're not spoiled, you just know what's good. ;-) |

I got take out breakfast today from that place on the corner that had a fire last year and was rebuilt. Not bad, although Georgia Diner is better. The sausage is a lot better than Tower Diner. My wife says everything in Tower Diner is dry and bland. The #1 Coffee Shop is also pretty good, although it's greasy. Charles, the grill cook is pretty good. Pop's Diner, the former Sage is not that good. For coffee I don't have a problem with the Starbuck's on 67th. It's better than the ones in the 71st area. My wife says make sure the hispanic girl makes the coffee. The new Thai place by Empire Liquors is excellent. I'm having my ktchen remodeled and ate more than a few meals from there in the last few weeks. Nick's Pizza is getting old and I prefer Dee's on Metropolitan. For sushi Mickey's is pretty good and the price is right. Sato is good but more money. |

Hey, Native! Right now, I am near the Lady Queen of Martyrs church. As you already know, this is prime FH, so unfortunately I will no longer be around the corner from Natural, Nicks or any of the other cool places. As a matter of fact, when I tell people that I won't be a two minute walk to everything like movies, they make fun of me and tell me how spoiled I am! P.S. I agree with a lot of your eating choices. I love the Knish Knosh and Tower Diner. I've never tried the others you mentioned, but look forward to them all. Have you tried King Davids. How do the supermarkets there compare? I've only seen Met, and it isnt opened as late as the Key Food or Natural stores. Thanks! P.S. Stay away from the "new" diner that opened up there. I ordered fried chicken, and the chicken was half frozen! |

Hi Vandelay96! Where do you live right now? Maybe you can recommend some of your personal favorite restaurants to me. The vicinity around 67th Ave has many great ones, but not as great as the Continental Ave/Austin St vicinity. I have been a steady customer for several years at Primadonna Pizzeria & Ristorante. A few doors down, Knish Nosh is classic! On Tuesday nights, Empire K Roasters has a great "all you can eat" buffet, and the Wok next door prepares authentic dishes. The Tower Diner is an unofficial neighborhood landmark. Take advantage of their delectable Greek specialties, and lunch & dinner specials. Feel free to ask me anything!!! Bon appetit! ^._.^ |

Haha, I will definitely eat more pizza!! From a place that will bring it to me when I'm in the mood for it!! My post was no more critical than countless others on this very thread, complaining about food, service, decor etc. Call ahead for takeout... welcome to the 70s. Seriously, now. That's fine for people who live across the street from your establishment, but you're severely limiting your potential if you're counting on that and casual walk-ins for business. This isn't Long Island. We don't get in our cars and drive 15 minutes to get a newspaper OR a pizza here. You want to operate in the city, get with the program. |

anonymous, why do you assume that because I complain about ONE thing that happened LAST NIGHT, that I've "had a bad day"? People come here to report on their experiences with restaurants, does that necessarily mean they're doing so because they've had a bad day? As a matter of fact, I had a great day. My experience LAST NIGHT with Joanne's was a small part of YESTERDAY, but the only part that had to do with this particular thread, so it's the only part of my YESTERDAY I shared with you. anon Why not give Joanne's a call and offer them your thoughts and suggestions? I don't know how good their food is, but if you feel they should deliver, then tell them that. They might enthusiastically join Takeout connection or one one of the other delivery services if they don't choose to deliver on their own. |

I was handed a menu for Joanne's in the street the other day. But they don't deliver. I guess I was supposed to take the menu home, study it, and then go back out to buy the food. Or possibly stand there in the street and read it, suddenly decide I want pizza at that very moment (at 10 am), and run to Joanne's... which was most likely not even open. How stupid. Don't hand out menus in the street unless you deliver. I was in the mood for pizza last night, remembered that menu in my bag, dug it out, finally narrowed down my choices, and then called, only to be told "No, we don't deliver." |

The tuna tartare would have tasted better if they had cooked it and made it into tuna fish salad. I ordered my meat med rare, it comes out well done. Normally I wouldn't say a thing but well done is for dummies that can't enjoy their meat, so I had to send it back. The next one comes out rarer that rare, I wouldn't usually mind it but knowing how mignon tastes this was surely not filet mignon... I then had to take a better look at my meat and notced the texture wasn't even close to it ( I've been bamboozled ) cheap meat. I was done after the tuna tartare and then the steak, Not only was the temperature off but remembering the critics description of the dish I had to cut my losses and move onto my wife's dish (red snapper) which I have to say made up for the last two blunders. Upon finishing her dish and a bottle of a great chardonnay ( russian river valley ) I was'nt going to take a chance with dessert. So asked for the check and we went on our way. The whole moral of this posting is to let my neighbors know that PLEASE SOMEONE OPEN a decent restaurant in this part of NYC and to hang the food critic that would rave about the dishes in his/her write up, cause clearly they need to get their taste buds checked out!!!! |

Queens Faves: Rouge for French food (the seared duck is also great)& Sgt. Garcia's for Mexican in Forest Hills (though service is sometimes very slow) Arunee for Thai food & Jackson Diner for Indian food (both very affordable); Pio Pio for Peruvian; all in Jackson Heights Kyoto in Flushing (on Union Tpke.) for sushi Quantum Leap in Fresh Meadows for a healthy, natural food restaurant Ihawan for Filipino food in Woodside The Penang in Elmhurst for Malaysian (I think the one in Flushing closed recently) Joe's Shanghai in Main St./Flushing area for Shanghainese (pork steamed buns filled with soup are the most popular item) East in Flushing for dim sum (can be a little overwhelmingly busy & ethnic tho, still is the best dim sum I've ever had) Daisy's on Queens Blvd. in Sunnyside for a fancy Italian restaurant at great prices (easy to impress a date there) O'Neills for porterhouse steak (almost as good as Peter Luger's) in Maspeth Kum Gang San in Flushing for Korean Two of my fave restaurants that closed in Forest Hills: Melting Pot (a loong time ago) and Melange. I have actually travelled to Virginia Beach for another Melting Pot. I also loved that we had a Tony Roma's in the area. Why the heck did Melange close anyway? I loved their lunch menu. |

We'd like to have a Sunday brunch in either Forest Hills or adjacent neighborhoods to celebrate a birthday. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant that has traditional "brunchy" food that can accomodate approximately 10 people? I see that both Rouge and Sarabella's do Sunday brunch. Do you recommend either place, or would it be better to go elsewhere? Thanks! |

They are expanding. You will notice that they are connecting the two store together. Orginal the Bistro was owned by a husand and wife. They split. The wife took over the other store right next to the Bistro, to open her own restrurant...which never opened. Now the two are being combined, not sure who owns them. That's what I heard. |

re MOOD in Kew Gardens I wasn't able to find the previous posts about MOOD but I wanted to share my thoughts since I gave it a try this evening. Unlike their website the music was not blasting loud. There was some jazz / R&B music playing but it was pleasant. For some bizarre reason MOOD has two large screen TV's over the bar (easily viewable from most of the dining area) but they are not closed captioned!! So I was watching a pro football game while listening to jazz. Very, very dumb! If you are going to have two large screen TV's get them with closed captioning!!!! As for the food, the mood salad was quite nice and quite reasonable. The Filet Mignon was cooked exactly as requested but it was charcoal grilled and blackened. I'm not a fan of "blackened" Filet Mignon so I wasn't thrilled with it (I prefer the more delicate French style with bernaise sauce) but I'd bet that MOOD must make a fantastic steak! The service was OK but nothing more. They took the bread plate away when I finished my roll, w/o offering another. Also, for some bizarre reason, they gave me one type of roll and my dining partner a different type, w/o asking if we had a preference. After pouring the first glass of wine (they were out of several selections) they never poured any additional glasses. They did offer refills on the coffee, however. I'd certainly go back to MOOD before or after a movie at the Kew Gardens Cinemas. I'd put it on par with Rouge in Forest Hills at this point; though since it was fairly empty on a Sunday evening, it was much quieter than Rouge. |

I know others have posted about it, but I tried Corfu last night, a new restaurant on Austin St. (upstairs in that crowded minimall with the elevator on the street). It is very good... fresh ingredients, tasty authentic Greek food, and reasonably priced. Spreading the word to help a good restaurant thrive in our neighborhood, since unfortunately there are so few. |

Regarding Bonnelle's mentioned below, I love their petit fours and the tarte au citron and that is about it. Though the ladies who run the show are not going to be my best friends, I haven't had a problem with them. Broadway Bakery has a pretty good chocolate cupcake and the bread pudding isn't too bad. Unfortunately they stopped carrying the rugula which I loved--much better than the Bagel Shop. If you are dying for old fashioned southern style cakes and brownies, I don't think you can beat the Buttercup Bake Shop on Second Ave around 49th. The baked goods are very similar to the Magnolia in the Village. For review on Buttercup: http://www.epinions.com/content_1619370116 |

Violations were cited in the following significant area(s) and those requiring immediate action were addressed. 1. Canned food product observed swollen, leaking, rusted, severely dented. 2. Hand washing facility not provided in or near food preparation area and toilet room. Hot and cold running water at adequate pressure not provided at facility. Soap and an acceptable hand-drying device not provided. 3. Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service. The Family Restaurant used to be great. I ate there about 2 years ago, after not for a long time. It was very good and the service was excellent. Funny thing is I recently checked their health inspection report and it did poorly. So, that coincides with your report of the food. Wonder if they sold it. I've pretty much looked up all the restaurants in the area. Mardi Gras always has a good report and pasta del giorno, pasta lovers, tutta pasta, Q-thai, peking duck always dirty. Here is the link if interested. I http://ibihost1.com/nycdoh/web/html/rii.pl I used to be a restaurant manager and there is no reason for some of these violations. FHGguy - This happened when I was in the bathroom and my husband was paying the bill. He's quite the pacifist, so he didn't make a big deal. But you're right; they shouldn't have mislead us like that... They also didn't start us off with a drink when we got there (which would have followed simple restaurant etiquette). I absolutely loved the food and for the most part the service was really good... However, now I'm skeptical about returning because of the deceit (which defeats the purpose of their having nickeled and dimed us if they lose our business, I mean, that costs a lot more than one measly plate of rice and beans). |

...By the way, yes, Baluchi's is pretty good; it's like blue jeans for Indian food. However, the other night I called to order it in and they gave me a hard time about delivering it to me, even though I am an easy bike-ride away (a few blocks...It was dark; otherwise I would have just picked it up myself). They assumed they wouldn't be able to find my place and were really nasty about it (couldn't they just get a map? And if they deliver why didn't they know the area?)... Anyway, I gave up, hung up, and had something else instead. |

Has anyone been to Mardi Gras? My husband and I tried it for the first time the other night. The food was great but they pulled one over on us with the prices. The menu had rice and beans together as one item and they charged them separately. They claimed they are "going" to change their menu and have them as separate items. In other words, it was false advertising. We don't care about the money; it's just the principle of the matter. Now you can't trust what they might pull as far as telling you about prices after the fact. |

Tried squid ink pasta for the first time today (in Manhattan) and was pleasantly surprised. The ink didn't have any weird taste. Still, it's funny to imagine the first person to think of cutting open a squid using it's ink to cook with. Is this something they package and sell? Once I had squid in squid ink over black spaghetti, and the second time another one of their fresh pasta dishes. Eat at Al Dente pizzeria (next to Kraham Realty) only if you don't mind the guy behind the counter resting your slice directly onto a counter so that he can take other stuff out of the oven. It's bad enough when pizzerias use their fingers to toss in your pizza to warm it up. I don't even rest my food directly on my counter at home. Maybe they would have more customers if they stopped those disgusting habits. And how long do those pizzas sit around for in a day? |

Daria there's not a lot of good Italian food here. You might go to renowned Sapori D'Ischia in Astoria. Family Restaurant has gone way downhill, as has La Vigna. Pasta Fresca or whatever that place on Austin is called is atrocious. It's been said that Luna Sur is good. Nick's has excellent pizza. Dee's has good pizza and mediocre pasta. There are a few bright spots but there is a lot of mediocre, bland food with no seasoning/minimal cooking technique in Forest Hills. |

There's a difference between well done and burnt, in my opinion. Santa Fe is very average, but compared to some of the other restaurants in the area (TGI Friday's, Uno's), it's not bad. My personal fav in that "genre" is Boulder Creek in the Target Shopping Center in College Point. |

A little update. Meyers Restaurant had a sign in the window that for summer holidays they were closing daily at 3 pm, so I don't think they're going out of business, though I don't know how they stay in business. The place is dirty and the food, at best, is mediocre. I also heard that Cord Meyer (I think that's the real estate name) intended to put Wendy's (on Continental Avenue) out of business, firstly by renting to Subway right next door, and then raising the rent from $17,000 to $30,000. That's a lot of burgers. I also went with friends to Johnny Rockets. The food was inedible, and almost every customer seemed to leave half their food uneaten. Cold, salty and greasy. Never again. |

Chikurin (by CompUSA) on Qns Blvd satisfies my sushi cravings. It's no Nobu, but you can't beat $2.50 a roll and $1 for each piece of sushi. Sounds too good to be true? I've been a regular ever since they opened and have had no complaints, except their sushi rice use to be too vinegary. Quick delivery too. Yeah, the pizza I got from Nick's was burnt too. I just discovered this website and I'm getting hungry! Anyway, here's what I have to say... My husband and I used to love Tako sushi, until I found out that some people we know got really bad food poisoning from their sushi, so I'd stay away from there... Pasta del Giorno has gone really downhill since several years ago. We tried to give it another chance a couple of years ago on New Year's Eve. We'd made a reservation but they were taking people who came in the door without reservations and were ignoring my husband and me. They've gotten really bad health reviews, everything is spelled completely wrong in their menu (not too bright), and their floor is very slippery (a major law-suit waiting to happen; I am really poised but almost fell quite a few times there). Whoever said Nick's pizza is always burnt, you are sooo right! It's not bad, but I have a theory that they rush heating it to increase the turnover of people coming in and out all night. As a result, it ends up getting too well-done on the outside/crust part and barely cooked on the dough/topping part. Narita is really good (Hibachi Chilean sea bass melts in your mouth), but what bothers me is that they don't first come and ask you what you want to drink, like a restaurant should. Food is good though if you want a simple Japanese meal. Santa Fe Steakhouse is very good and the service is always consistent. I'm sure I'll add more later... |

Mickey's--please update decor!!! Please!!! I love the seafood salad at Pasta Del Giorno. It doesn't bother me that the staff is mostly Latin American. La Vigna, downhill? we went to La Vigna last night. the service couldn't have been more lackadaisical. but the food really went downhill. The bruschetta were way too vinegary. Fried zucchini were heavy with too much batter and overcooked. Tomato sauce didn't taste fresh, and tiramisu was sour, not sweet. what on earth happened, it used to be good there. |

Service was extremely slow (and it wasnt even crowded!) wait staff was just Ok, nothing to rave about. and the food wasnt what I expected. I agree on Rouge ... good looking place and good staff, but the food is rather ho-hum. Nothing I would go back for. Good to take a date to, but not a place I would frequent. If you want to try good Bistro style French food, give Dirty Pierre a shot. They are in Station Square. Limited menu but real tasty. |

I spent part of each of the past 35 years in France. I know French food from every region. Rouge is not great French food. Maybe it's good French food for Queens, but this place would not survive a month in Paris or anywhere in France.

Super-sizing it is one of the less successful American inovations. The scallops in Rouge are perfect. Portions are supposed to be small in French cuisine. |

On a recent visit to Pasta del Giorno, the pasta fagioli did not contain any pasta at all. The mostly Latin American waitstaff were clueless about what I was complaining about. Is this place really Italian? We dined at Rouge for the first time and were not too impressed, although I'm intrigued to try it again. After ordering I was told the bouillabaise special was no longer available. The duck I had instead was overcooked and tasteless. My mother left hungry after a very small portion of the scallop dish. Most portions were very small. Has anyone tried Luna Sur, an Italian restaurant across the street from Alberto on Metropolitan Avenue? The room looks nice and the menu interesting although appetizer prices are quite high. |

Yeah, Michelle--I just passed Max's. What a disappointment. Ham sandwiches. Possibly a desparate ploy before they close? We already have a 24 hr deli on Austin and 72nd. When I moved here 10 years ago, I wondered why this neighborhood, which has so much, didn't have a Kosher deli. Surely FH is as cosmopolitan as Rego Park is. |

Homestead - Max's Deli -- Didya see that they are not Kosher anymore? Now serving ham sandwiches. If they wanted to be Kosher - the way to go would have been with a decor similar to Ben's and serve real Deli food like chopped liver, pastrami, stuffed derma - not have these things and make the place look generic and plain. |

Actually, the new restaurant Il Pescatore (in business six months) is excellent. I tried it based on a recommendation on this message board and it did not disappoint. The Spaghetti Neri a la Livornese (black spaghetti with squid in squid ink) was the best I've ever had; the friend with whom I dined loved his pasta Romanesca with shrimp. The pasta was fresh, homemade and perfect. |

re: Tony and Portofino Actually, It's just "Rouge" not "Le Rouge" but I have to agree that the French food served there is tops in Forest Hills (though the noise level is deafening). I'm surprised that the Sgt. Garcia owners are involved with Rouge because I've never liked Sgt. Garcia's. My top FH Italian is Pasta Del Giorno (although the latest board of health inspection wasn't good). |

Portofino may be the best in Forest Hills but that is because of dreary competition. Portofino gives vast quantities of so-so food. It does not give quality. Carmine is a gentleman but the food is mediocre. The best food locally is at Le Rouge. |

I recently went to a lovely bridal shower at Abracciamentlo Restaurant, 6296 Woodhaven Boulevard. They serve Italian food (obviously, by the name). They had vegetarian plates for the vegetarians, sugar free deserts for the few diabetics, and were very helpful and accommodating. Also, there was a party store right across the street where you could rent the bridal shower chair (throne?) and other decorations. |

Il Pescatore is great, the ambiance, drinks, food. There is a new chef from Naples and his is the best food I've ever had outside of Italy. That guy who posted up there is on crack. There isn't one sandwich on the menu. Wraps?? Are you kidding?? It's Italian cuisine at its best, they'd smack you if you asked for a wrap in Italy. The service is european style (kinda slow), but as they say, "good food takes time". Oh, and their risottos are all made to order and outstanding. |

Very interesting comments (except for a few eye rollers). Well heres my two cents (maybe I am overestimating my views worth?) Bonelles just on aesthetics alone is sad and depressing...that whole street strip bar Nicks is unworthy to be in our neighborhood...the korean market folks are overly cheap, that new barbershop has the goons sitting outside the store on dilapidated chairs adding a ghettoish feel to the block and then you have Bonelles which looks like a 70's train station (Death Wish era). As for food re me: Nicks is very good, Dees is the poor mans Nicks...Q, pricey yes but serves excellent thai and makes u feel comfy in what is a very tight space...I'll take Portofinos pizza any time over AJ's. Its a shame that Portofinos food is so underwhelming because its a nice looking restaurant and Carmine is a true gentleman and a good icon for Forest Hills to have. Basically Forest Hills has become a food destination for tourists from other Queens neighborhoods who catch a flick here and wish to dine also...I think many FHers dont even eat in FH alot. I know I leave it for the tourists although even they dont deserve TGIF :o). |

Thank you, Vasillya. I'm glad you feel the same. To preserve landmark or historic buildings and their interior is expensive. (A little out of focus in this thread, sorry.) Is it possible for owner to get subsidiary or tax incentive? Any lawyer here? It would be good to form a community landmark organization. Does F.H. have architects or designers respect for the good, historical values here? (Check how the “St. Barbara Beautiful” works in Carlifornia.) Just my 2 cents.

Hi Michelle! It makes me feel so great that there are people out there like you who still have respect for the good, historical things. Homestead renovations: I completely agree - when I said it was bland looking, I was being nice. Everyday when I passed by and saw them working and could see through the paper, it ripped my heart out to see the old ceiling, and wood walls go down. Even the old counters. All right, maybe it was old but they could have preserved soemthing. This place looks like a generic nightmare compare to the old European look. For all the money they put it, I am sure there was a way to preserve something and still work tables and chairs in. |

In regard to Michelle's posting & Max's Deli: I think that the job Max's Deli did in revamping the Homestead Deli is totally disgraceful! Max's Deli might have good food, but all of you at Max's Deli have no appreciation for history whatsoever. Have a little respect! Our past is being wiped out gradually, right before our eyes. What happened to the Homestead's ornate, compressed tin celing that was there since the teens or early 20's (now covered over by cheap, lackluster cardboard paneling)? Historical integrity of the neighborhood is going downhill over all. Rooftops of historic structures are covered by graffiti, which landlords fail to wipe off. The fecht werk on some tudor buildings among the Austin St strip is missing, and not replaced. And hoodlums have the nerve to deface the arches within the gardens. What is Forest Hills becoming? A pigpen? Minimal respect for history! Sorry for sounding so harsh, but let's convince Max's Deli to restore that now covered over tin ceiling. It's a start, and let's enforce stricter regulations for graffiti vandals. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! How about a little respect & dedication as a community? |

Empanada's are coming back. The original Empanada store that closed last year, became an Asian trading store, which just closed has been rented and will reopen as another empanada restaurant. Breadstix seems to have become a pet store or shop. One of the bag stores near the Body Shop is being renovated, anyone been to Max's Deli yet? They completely revamped it - not too much of a selection. Pretty basic looking. Too new and bland for me. Now that North Fork and GreenPoint are one, which one will close? Probably North Fork near Citibank. Anything doing at Melange grill? |

I'm not sure if they all deliver to your area, but I'd put my top three as: #1. Tung Shing House (Queens Blvd in Rego Park across from Comp USA) #2. Cafe Japon a Chinese/Japanese restaurant around 75th and Queens Blvd that does both cuisines surprisngly well (their Sushi and Sashimi is incredible if you like Japanese food for a change. They recently changed their name to Cafe Japon. They used to be called Kakki-Kotu or something like that. Same managment and chef. #3. Not quite up to the first two but still worth a try is Peking Duck Forest on 70th Road near Uno's and Santa Fe Steakhouse. All three are somewhat pricier than your typical storefront take out. Enjoy! |

Tried Portofino after a 6 year hiatus - still disappointed and not interestedin dining there other than Pizza. The waiter never brought the coffee I ordered when we sat down - then when I asked for a cup of extra sauce for the pasta that hardly had any, another waiter said ok, walked by 3x then finally brought it when we made eye contact and I stared at him. Carmine and the other maitre de couldn't have been nicer but the food was mediocre at best. Too much sauce on the eggplant rollatine as well as the pasta primavera's ordered. The fried calimari was excellent though. Still prefer the pizza. Sorry. |

I would like to put in a word of praise for Family Restaurant. This past Sunday (and many Sundays) my family met for a meal there in mid-afternoon. My aunt is in a wheelchair, and both my aunt and uncle get a bit hysterical requesting 4 million cups of coffee before we have even ordered. We stay there way way too long, but the staff in the restaurant, as well as the owners, are so pleasant, caring and hospitable that it's as comfortable as my own home. It's definitely the most "human" of all the restaurants in the neighborhood, and dealing very sweetly with everyone wanting their leftovers to go, with all sorts of instructions, and they never stop smiling. Fancier places may come and go but my heart will always remain with FAMILY! |

He then became a bartender, then was the bartender at "The Monster" bar in Jackson Heights where he won a "best bartender award". Once, when I was at Uno's, I saw Doug behind the bar again but never after that. I guess he was only visiting. Doug is a TERRIFIC waiter and I'm sure he's an equally terrific bartender. La Terraza is a nice friendly restaurant. It has a fairly standard Italian-American menu, not what you would find in the Italy of 2004 but more like the Italy of 1904. Any comments on "La Terrazza" or "Il Pescatore" lately? La Terrazza is next to the Midway theater. I didn't particularly like them in their previous incarnation (Tutta Pasta)and I'm suspicious of an Italian restaurant that is having a "Superbowl Party". "Il Pescatore" across from the post office went through many incarnations too. I used to enjoy the thin crust pizzas that they once served. Now, they have sandwiches and wraps for lunch. Again I'm suspicious. I always think about trying those two, but end up at Pasta Del Giorno or Family Restaurant instead. |

I also prefer Family over Portofino for southern Italian. I was just making a point that to post a seven and a half year old review is pretty meaningless. |

Rouge is the best. Their monk fish with white beans is marvelous as are thier scallops. My wife says their meat dishes are wonderful as well. We have eaten there four times and found it consistently excellent. |

Sorry Soph Pal, but I personally appreciate warnings about bad restaurants. I prefer to avoid them. For generally good (although hardly outstanding) local Southern Italian cuisine, I would suggest the family Restaurant over Portofino any day. |

I must say I thought the purpose of this section of the message board was to make and seek restaurant suggestions. We all have different tastes which are not necessarily "bad" or "good" only matters of opinion. How about we stick to offering ideas and sharing experiences and not making jabs at each others' tastes, hmm? PS - I happen to love Portofino for the food, atmosphere, and Carmine's hospitality! Most times when I am there, it is rather crowded. Must be a lot of us with "bad taste" out there. |

Thank you, Jane. While I agree with the assessments of 5 Burros and Just Like Mother's and even Austin Ale House, I think it unreasonable to list one experience at Portofino from seven and a half years ago. I mean, isn't it possible that that particular cook no longer works there?

excellent comeback grammarian -- however, typos and e-mails written in haste aside, Portofino offers mediocre food that appeals only to people who do not know what good food is. |

What is that supposed to mean? Poeple with a sophisticated palette are people with a sophistictaed palette. Good food is goof food, and bad food is bad food. Only someone with bad taste in food (be they Italian or not) would consider Portofino to be a good restaurant |

I ate at Portofino once in July 96 and it was horrible. I ordered tortolini (however it's spelled) and it was either hard as a rock or frozen. The mussels were equally uninteresting. Carmine wasn't there that day and I did not bother telling anyone or ever going back. I still go there but for Pizza and Calzones, but that's about it. I am totally not impressed with the Parkside so if I had to, I would go with the Family. I had one good meal and one bad one at Pasta DelGiorno - the brunch at Pasta Lovers in KewGardens is good. Just like Mothers is excellent. The Polish platter is the best. For Mexican - 5 Burro is great and the Austin House for Burgers and breakfast. |

Never had a problem with Porto Fino in 15 years. Carmine runs an impeccable establishment-- better than some of those $100 a plate places in Manhattan. |

I meant Tutto Bene, I thought the all the alternative places in the FH area closed/ The orignal Tutto Bene, was on Queens Blvd by 75th Ave, or 76th, except they had a fire many years ago. And related down the Block frim Chalet Alpine, ( which isn't bad ) on Metro |

I am shocked, Adrienne. I've been eating at Portofino for twenty years. Of course, I've never ordered steak at an Italian restaurant. I usually get that at a steak house. You definitely should have said something to Carmine, the owner. He goes out of his way to satisfy his customers. You might want to give Family Restaurant a try. They have excellent southern Italian cuisine. |

I have eaten at Portofino's and have enjoyed it. Excellent Italian is found at Alberto or La Vigna on Metropolitan off Continental. My all time favorite local place is on Queens Blvd. just off Ascan (2 doors down from Portofino). It is "Just like Mother" A Polish cuisine and the Blintzes and Pierogi's are fabulous. Baluchi's on Queens Blvd is also quite good. |

Wow, I just ate at Portofino and had the best food and service, maybe your waiter was bad ,or could not speak. If you had such a bad experience you should have told on of the guys at the front when you walk in, they are very nice and would have done something right away. I live in Forest Hills Gardens and eat there often, I heard the place on Yellowstone had health inspection problems, if it is the same place. I will have to order some steak and see what I think this week. |

Portafino (corner of QB and Ascan) My father is here visiting from Seattle. We just returned from a dinner at Portafino. My father describes the meal as some of the worst food he has had during his visit. My father knows the business well as my brother is the chef and owner of a restaurant named Robin Hood in the Union, Wa. area. My father ordered a rib eye steak. What he got looked like sirlion cut with 80 percent grizzle. When my father voiced his complaint the waiter had no response whatsoever As for my meal it was a great dissapointment as I was expecting the same quality I experienced over a year ago at this same restaurant. The arugula, radicchio and endive salad was a bunch of lettuce thrown haphazardly on a plate. Instead of a house dressing a bottle of oil and a bottle of vinegar was placed on the side. The mussels were overcooked and tasteless. The sauce was basically mush with no liquid consistency. They really have nerve serving this crap and roadkill type meat for a bill of $110.00. If your looking for a great Italian meal in the Forest Hills vicinity you won't be dissapointed with Da Silvania on Yellowstone Blvd. I forget what soup we ordered but every spoonful was savored. The sauce of the shrimp parmasean was nothing short of amazing. The waiters were a pleasure. |

Is "FM" on Austin Street gone? When they first opened, I tried them (my 1st and only time there) and I found that they had a skilled chef in the kitchen who could easily work at some of Manhattan's finer restaurants. Unfortunately, the prices matched Manhattan's prices too. Then, they started having discounts and then turned into what seemed like a nightclub. This evening (Sunday) FM was closed. Is it gone? Also, has anyone dined at Sarabella on Metropolitan? It's been there for several months, but the prices seem VERY high even for Forest Hills. |

A&J - I'm not thrilled with their Pizza. My aunt always orders from there - and I think Portofino is better. Anyone go to Adriana near Melange Grill (Heskels/Danielles) I haven't been there in a long time. There used to be another one close to Sushi Oh but it closed a few years ago. How about Sorisi on Continental? They've been there for ages. |

around 67th ave. the intersection where towne diner is. at that location there are two different coffee shops on queens blvd. i ate at one of the recently, i chose the one on the NORTH side of queens blvd. because the one on the SOUTH side of queens blvd. looked gross through their window. let me say this about "coffee shops", they are NOT to be confused with diners. although they have menus that resemble diners, they will have none of the food on the menu unless it's eggs, burgers, fried chicken cutlets, or pancakes. |

You mean Tutto Bene. It's on Metro between Continental and 72nd. It's close to Continental just a few stores down. It's Italian, I've gone there for espresso. They have a singer at night and the restaurant was originally on QB and Ascan Avenue when Portofino was a Pizzeria. Tutto Bene closed after a fire destroyed the place and it moved up to Metro. That's all I know. |

Don Pepe's - ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!!!!! I agree, I just didn't mention it because it was out of the neighborhood. Once you eat there, you will never be able to eat Italian Food anywhere. The only thing, is that because it is family style, you have to go with someone who likes what you do. I have had their veal, seafood salad, baked clams, seafood over pasta, tirimisu and that's about it. I am NEVER disappointed. I am so thrilled with my basics that I never deviate to try something new. |

The best Italian restaurant in NYC is Don Pepe's on Lefferts Blvd way down near North Conduit. Don Pepe's does not take reservations or have menus or take credit cards. Don Pepe's has a waiting room with the ambiance of a Motor Vehicles office. When you get a table, the waiters are surly. The restaurant is a windowless room that looks like a finished basement but people regularly drive in from sixty or seventy or even eighty miles away for the food--which really is excellent. Locally, La Terraza (next to the Midway Theatre) is not bad but the food is much less flavorful than Don Pepe's. |

Sarabella has excellent food. It is expensive and, depending on the waiter, a little slow. We only go there for special occasions. Portofino has good food, especially the mussels. You should definitely give it another try. Family is my first choice always. Make a reservation and you'll be OK. |

Haven't tried it yet. I thought their prices were a little on the high side too. I don't like the Parkside, I think their food is mediocre at very high prices. I don't know what the Rave is in Zagat's every year. The Family is still good but always crowded and I tried Portofino once, didn't like it - wouldn't go back. |
