There's a great playground with tennis basketball and handball courts on Grand Central parkway at 62nd drive/ave. Also, at the dog park further south at about 65th Road/Ave, on the GCP, take the pedestrian overpass to the dinosaur playground. That playground gets pretty crowded on weekends because of flushing meadow park. |

There are 4 playgrounds in the area that I'm familiar with: 1) Union Turnpike and 71st Ave 2) Behind the Junior High School at Yellowstone and Austin. 3) Austin Street (East of Ascan - South side of the street) 4) In Forest Park (Near Kew Gardens Rd and Union Tpke) The playground at the Hall of Science is my personal favorite - although it's not in FH and they charge $3 admission. |

Hello all, I am looking for a good (1) electrician and (2) hardwood floor installation/refinishing company to work on my house in FH. I would really like to directly work with companies that do this work specifically as opposed to a general contractor. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! |

"All In the Family" was taped in Los Angeles ('from Television in Hollywood'), but the opening of the show was indeed shot along Cooper Avenue as ANON120 suggests. Norman Lear sent a camera crew out to find a block of typical Queens houses. Though some references on the show indicate the Bunkers lived in Corona or somewhere near Northern Blvd, Cooper Avenue won out. You can still see the flagpole in front of the house. |

I BELIEVE THE OPENING SHOT OF ALL IN THE FAMILY, WHERE THEY SHOW THE ROW OF HOUSES, IS COOPER AVENUE BETWEEN WOODHAVEN BLVD AND METROPOLITAN AVE. IF YOU ARE COMING DOWN METROPOLITAN AVE. TOWARDS MIDDLE VILLAGE, YOU WOULD MAKE A RIGHT ON COOPER AVE. AND RIGHT THERE IS THE SMALL ROW OF HOUSES, RIGHT DOWN BY THE BEER DISTRIBUTOR. |

I do NOT recommend Ascend Spa! Whoever is at the front is very nice. HOWEVER, it does not seem like their staff members are qualified. (Now that I think about it, I have never seen any posted documentations/certifications on the walls.) I went there about a week ago to get a pedicure before my vacation. The girl who did my toes did not look like she was older than 15. She also scraped up the skin on my toe with a buffer, and it started bleeding. It hurt me on my whole vacation and I still have an unsightly scab there! In addition, she had dug really hard into the nail when she was cleaning it out. Both wounds had burned profusely when she put on products that contained alcohol. Pedicures should not hurt! And staff members should be more competent! |

I just think he is nasty individual. I went in to ask about the NY Post Met pins that were being sold last month and he raised his voice and said "what do you want, today, tomorrow, yesterday?" I thought he was being sarcastic and told him so. He starting getting really beligerent and I told him that it is rude to yell at people. His tone got lower and he said he has been in business for 19 years and just talks loud. I also had a problem with him about 2 years ago when he developed photo's where a few were missing or duplicated in error. He denied the whole thing. I do not like him. |

I have a question for my fellow foresthillians. Do any of you frequent the Teamo/newspaper/candy store on QB next the Family Restaurant right above the 75th Avenue train station? If so, has anyone found the owner to be a bit on the rude side? He always appears to be yelling or raising his voice. When I asked him he said that that is just the way he speaks, but I think he is rude. Just wondering. |

Oreo, First off they are finding that plastic may be harmful to us in the way that it is used for all packaging these days. Even some cartons are lined with plastic instead of wax for the savings. Using glass bottles that are sanitized and reused also creates much less garbage and pollution. The last I remember, there should be a bus stop for the 23 on Austin St, by the police station/Heskels Plaza. From what I've read in another thread, the bus stops are probably filled in with vehicles belonging to the police dept employees, but there should be some sort of indication as to where. Looking at Triboro's route map for Q23, it looks like the last stop is at the apartment bldg's across the turnpike from S&S or it may pull right into S&S. |

Find out about Access-a-Ride, which provides transportation for people who are unable to use public bus or subway service for some or all of their trips. It offers shared ride, door-to-door paratransit service. MTA New York City Transit administers AAR; private carriers under contract to NYC Transit provide service. The Access-A-Ride application is available on-line in pdf format or, call 877-337-2017, 646-252-5252, TTY 646-252-5104 or TTY Relay 800-662-1220 and press "1" when you hear the recorded message to be connected to the Customer Information Line. Between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday through Friday, representatives are available to answer your questions about AAR and can send you an application |

Lulu: The first graders have been in those trailers for at least 7 or 8 years now. They were supposed to be temporary with a max time of 5 years. Not to mention that everytime these kids have to go in for science, computer, lunch, or whatever, they have to get dressed during winter months (coats and what not) just to walk back into the main building. The trailers are nice, they have their own bathrooms and watercoolers, but they are tiny, and the kids do not have any space to themselves. Oh, and the fancy word for them is "portables"....because it just makes it sound so much more acceptable.... |

Dude, you have to get out more. A 4 year old can certainly be emotionally disturbed enough to be in a special school. If they can't interact properly with their fellow classmates, if they hit on a contant basis, etc. -- I think this is where they'll put them. |

New Forest Hills Special Ed School Opens I noticed that the school at 108-55 69 AVENUE in Forest Hills has been busy with students this year, most of whom arrive on buses so I checked into it. It turns out that the school now serves the students who are the most violent and most disturbed and are unable to be "contained" in other special ed environments. The school supposedly serves PK to 12th grade. For more information you can go to http://www.nycenet.edu/OurSchools/Region75/Q004/default.htm I wish the school staff luck. They have a tremendous challenge on their hands. I don't know of any other school that handles PK to 12th grade! And I wonder how the NYC department of education was able to do this without any community protest? The most violent and disturbed students in the entire city being bused to Forest Hills? |

My friend's mother is at Forest View and I went to visit. The first few floors seem to be for rehabilitation, and are bright and cheerful and smell clean. However, as you go to the higher floors, the place smells like a subway bathroom. I've seen the dinners they serve, and if they were to serve them in a US prison, there would be rioting. Most of the staff seemed kind and caring with the patients, but the general atmosphere is just so depressing, smelly and horrible that I think it's a very unfortunate and demoralizing way for people to have to spend their final days. |

Personally, I don't like nursing homes, period.. However, for 16 years, until early this year, I lived in the Majestic on 71st Ave and frequently passed the Forest View Nursing Home at 71-20 110th St. Quite often in nice weather, the residents were outside being walked or wheeled in their wheelchairs. They always seemed happy and the staff accompanying them seemed to really care as well. I'd suggest that you check it out. Their phone is 718-793-3200 or 718-263-1887. Again, I don't know what the facility is like, but if I were looking into nursing homes, it certainly would be one that I would want to consider. |

any experiences with Di Blasi Ford I wouldn't recommend them. The people they farm their work out to did a terrible job on the alarm system. After coming back several times, the head of the Service Dept. told me "don't come back here again". After a pregnant pause, he then said to take it directly to the guys in Woodside. I got the hint and haven't bought a Ford since. |

to LSC When I was considering a Ford Explorer, I went to La Fres Ford. The salesperson, Rhoni was her name, was wonderful. I waited a few weeks, and decided to rent one for a day for an extended test drive. They rented me a spotless XLT with leather, a V8, and traction and stability control. I ended up buying a different SUV, but I have to say that Rhoni was wonderful. I'm not sure if she is still with them since she was planning to move upstate with her fiancee. But based on my experience with LaFres, I'd add them to you options. I was not at all impressed by the Ford dealer on Hempstead Turnpike who told me he had to get my name address and phone in order to give me a brochure. I told him I could get that online, and walked out. He also didn't know that ALL Explorers for 2005 are available with stability control. |

Vandelay96, believe it or not, yes the leaf blowers are much much louder than the the sound comming from the LIRR..i think you should take it from someone who would not wake up from LIRR train's noise but from that buzzing, never ending leaf blower!...In any case, you missed the point, so here it goes: It is about respect and consideration for others, something that sadly enough is eroding from our society...that is all, Hey you can keep on laughing out loud until a Fresh Direct Truck comes and annoys you, then it will be my turn for laughs! |

to Love Thy Earth I have fond memories of being in second grade and taking a "class walk" to collect leaves and then identifying them. Having all these leaves by my house is rather nostalgic. But the city has certain regulations, unfortunately. My gardiner collects the leaves on Tuesdays but by Thursday I have about 30 bags of leaves to collect and the same on Saturday. |

I live in Austin Street, and lately I have been annoyed to no avail with the "leaf Blowers", those little machines that make such an increduble loud sound (even with windows closed). As a thought for anonymous 2, it would help if you bag the leaves and throw them out, in that way, you will spend less time with your loud machine (since you are only blowing them away, what makes you think the wind will not bring them back? plus if you bag the leaves your effort will be useful for getting rid of the leaves! altogether, you know, just a thought!!!) |

What is the official law on leaves? What I read says that homeowners have to keep their sidewalk clear of leaves and the first 15" of the curb (which I take it means the street?). I mulch and bag the leaves that are on my lawn, sidewalk and driveway and put them out on the special leaf pickup days. But my feeling is that the leaves that are already in the street stay in street and I usually use the blower to blow them 16" or more away from the curb. I'm wondering though what the official rule is about leaves in the street? Are they supposed to be bagged as well or can they just be blown away from the curb? |

I'm working on a couple other stories for Newsday and was wondering if you knew of any folks to interview. The first is on parents in their 50s who are helping their adult children financially due to job loss, death of a spouse, gambling problem, etc. Maybe the adults kids are even living with the parents. The second is on the lack of washers/dryers in apartment buildings in NYC. In other cities, apartment complexes/condos advertise that each unit comes with a stackable washer/dryer. Here, tenants/owners don't even have the privilege of doing laundry in their building. Do you know anyone who could talk about schlepping their dirty clothes to a laundromat, someone who has a washer/dryer in the apartment, etc.? Can you refer me to some friends, acquaintances, relatives . . . ? Your input would be appreciated. E-mail me at topnotchreporter@yahoo.com Susan |

Don't go to Piu Bello! This used to be a cute date-place for gelato and coffee. I hadn't been there in 4 or 5 years and went there last Sunday. The menus are the same, photographs of big glasses of gelato sundaes with descriptions and prices underneath. We ordered one to share (it looked like a pint glass, so should have been plenty for two) and what came to the table was a small white wine glass, with maybe one scoop's worth of gelato and no whipped cream. Complaints to the manager did nothing. She directed us to the back of the menu to a disclaimer that discrepancies between the photo and the actual item may occur based on availability. I can understand substituting flavors, but not quantity. For $6.25 I expect a sundae, not a small scoop. She refused to accept that the store was doing anything wrong. I guess there are enough new customers to bother with pleasing the ones you have. We ended up leaving the "sundae" on the counter and leaving without paying for it. Not a great way to end an evening out. As much as I like to support the local guy over the chain stores, we'll be at Cold Stone Creamery our next night out. At least they're nice to you and when you give them a tip, they sing for you! |

Austin Dental Spa... Has anyone been to this new dentist's office which is right on Austin Street (building across from Lucille Roberts)? Did you have a positive experience? Do they have up-to-date equipment? Did you feel relaxed and well taken care of? Which dentists operate at this practice? Any info and feedback would be appreciated as I'm looking for a good local dentist. Thanks in advance! |

to Erik re: Pulmonologist Yes, I was extremely happy with the pulmonary/asthma doctor that I consulted last year. Her name is Jodilyn Gingold. Her office is at 110-42 72nd Road (on the North Side of Queens Blvd just down the block from the Kennedy House). Her phone is 718-544-7752. She takes her time with her patients so understand that there will likely be a long wait in the office. But I was extremely pleased with her (and I'm in the health care field myself). |

How does one create a topic? I emailed the admin for an account, no responce so far. Anyways, any of you know of any good dry cleaners? I tried Ming's laundromat because they had free delivery. They told me they would deliver at 6PM. I called up 6:14PM and they delivered it at 7PM. I got all my clothes back and everything. However everything was washed and was wet, and was not dry cleaned. I mean they are really friendly and everything. But Im looking for something better that delivers if possible, however if its good without delivery I will consider it. I heard someone say Dartmouth cleaners was good which is the closest one to me. However they look rather expensive being near the pinnacle and all. Im further back from the pinnacle but still in that general area. Would appreciate suggestions. Tons of cleaners here so some have to be good. Very competitive. |

Appliance Retailer Recommendation After living in a Co-Op for several years in Forest Hills I recently purchased a home. The previous owner highly recommended Len Harris on 164th Street in Fresh Meadows for appliances. I'm not a fan of the chains (Sears, PC Richard etc) so I paid a visit to Len Harris and was extremely pleased. The store is usually crowded and Len personally waits on all the customers so the wait was somewhat long, but well worth it. For anyone who likes to patronize the neighborhood retailers, I'd suggest giving Len Harris a try. No, he is not in Forest Hills, but once you meet him, you'll see that he is concerned about the community. |

For all co-op owners: I am recommending you switch your electric generation portion to Green Power. You will remain with Con Edison for electric delivery. Oil prices will be skyrocketing and renewable energy will be cheaper AND will be less polluting for the long term. You have two current choices for green power in Forest Hills, Con Edison Solutions at www.conedsolutions.com and 1st Rochdale at http://www.1strochdalenyc.coop I recommend 1st rochdale over con edison even though con edison is cheaper because there is no contract term and the energy mix is better with more wind power and less hydro. Our men are dying in Iraq and if just 1% of NY'ers signed up for Green Power, it would force more renewable energy to be created and thus save our environment and human lives from war as well. We can make a difference.

LOOKING FOR BASEMENT WATERPROOFING RECOMMENDATION I'm closing on a home shortly and I'm going to need a reputable and, CURRENTLY LICENSED basement waterproofer since the water table is high under the home. The neighbors check any contractor that works on any home in the neighborhood to make sure they are currently licensed. Otherwise, they file a complaint with the City and they've done this numerous times to others. Anyone have good or bad experiences with waterproofers? If you don't know if they are licensed I can easily check. Thanks |

Johnny Rockets is a 1950's style diner with burgers, chili, fries, shakes and onion rings. They also have sandwiches. They dress in 50's diner garb and sing doo-wop. There is one on east 8th street in the village and one in the Staten Island Mall. They also have juke boxes. |

Re: painters. I had a very good experience with George Smirtos, Hellenic Painting. He was recommended to me by a friend, and really did a good job - he took extra time to strip globby paint off of my baseboards because it would look better, and didn't jack up his fee disproportionately. I don't know about his work removing wallpaper, but you could ask him. His number is 718-601-9744 |

FH is kid friendly! Yes, our family moved here from Astoria, Queens for that very reason. Astoria was okay, but FH is much nicer. We love the Central Queens YMHA, FH Library, Barnes & Noble's kid section upstairs, Reform Temple Tot Shabbat, Yellowstone Park... And we've been here only a few months and are still learning what the neighborhood has to offer. Now that the weather is nicer we will walk around and find more to do I'm sure. We are zoned for PS 174, which my daughter (now 2.5 years old) will start attending in Kindergarten. I've already researched it and I'm satisfied. You can get all kinds of useful local school info at www.insideschools.org including reviews. |

Is Forest Hills Kid-friendly? My husband and I have a three year old and we are considering moving from Brooklyn to Forest Hills. I have visited a number of times but have not been able to get a grasp on whether or not Forest Hills is a good neighborhood for kids. I know ps 196 is good. Are there any other good schools or good preschools? Is Forest Hills politically liberal? Is it convenient? Queens Blvd. Seems hard to cross-is this a problems? Where do you go for parks? |

The same night the side of Christian Science Reading Room, the underpass on Greenway South that goes behind 20 Continental, and the Mailboxes on Burns Street were all destroyed with the same type of spray paint, There are two tags that are everywhere, so it is a hand full 2 or 3 kids. 1. FLEX 2.ANTE1 OR ANT 1 ,is the most common words around the Gardens. My advice is to take pictures of everything, because whenever these little "rap ghetto want a be's" get busted property owners have recourse to get property damages paid.If the kids are under the age, the parents would be liable. We are keeping a log and will work with the N.Y.P.D. and get them any way we can, and if that don't work than we could do things the "OLD SCHOOL WAY". |

from what I could remember, it was about 4 or 5 years ago. A Filipino family was living in the house, both parents were Doctors, they had two boys that went to St. Francis Prep. The father did not live there they were divorced. One morning they found the mother dead in her Mercedes on Ascan- at first they thought it was a robbery but then after an investigation they arrested the oldest boy and he confessed to killing her.Last I heard he was in jail and the house has people from the Philepines staying there.I will try to check the internet for any old articles about it and let you know. It's ashame the more money people get the more f***ed up they get. |

I also see a big change in the gardens.I can't understand what we are paying for, I have almost two-thousand dollar assoc. fees and all we get is a guy that walks down the path with a snow blower twice a year. Why can't the security patrol or the gardens crew notify the office when they see spray paint somewhere or the crew could remove it the same week. I have seen the same things that Roger in the post said although he missed alot. The tunnel off Greenway South that runs behind 20 Continental is detroyed there is not an inch without writing on it, I also know two people that one lives in 6 Burns the other in 25 Burns, they have had big problems with kids and drugs, 6 Burns in the fall found two needles on one of their doorsteps and 25 Burns has the same kids every night that smoke pot in the back doorways. When one of them called the cops they where told that kids smoking drugs was a 311 call? I think if they remove the writing on a daily or weekly basis it will stop, these kids love to show of their work after school and to see it everyday, don't give them that enjoyment. Also, alot of the kids that hang out and cause destruction along Burns Street don't even live in Forest Hills, They are a bunch of girls that dress and talk different that live in the gardens, they bring around guys from Jamaica to take drugs with ( no this theory is not far fetched , the police told me once that the gardens girls have big trouble and big problems one of them got beat up by a guy that was from Jamaica, and that when they chase the kids from the steps on 71st. next to Rite Aid one night they were smoking pot all the guys ID'S were Jamaica,Hollis,Cambria Heights. WOW can you imagine that going on years ago - HAVE THINGS IMPROVED? NOT IN THE GARDENS. CALL THE FOREST HILLS GARDENS CORP. LIKE I AM THIS WEEK AND TELL THEM TO KEEP ALL OF OUR VALUES UP THEY HAVE TO GET WITH IT. |

Yes. that's the house by the church. I saw it too. maybe it's an isolated incident. I think the kids took over the house since the death of the parents. even the door was spray painting w/ some anti sematic (spelling?) symbol on it. it certainly decreases the value of the neighborhood. What a shame to have such things to worry about. Does anyone else know the story about the owner being murdered?? |

I saw it also, I think if the Gardens Corp. does not step up on Grafitti, the Gardens will soon be like Corona, I see more and more kids, grafftii and drugs. The house on Norton and Greenway South,150 Burns,25 Burns, The side of the Christian Reading Room, the LIRR signs, and various Stop signs and Lamposts have been that way for months- and no one seems to care ( maybe it's Gardens kids that people look the other way).I live in between Ascan and Union Tpke, In the Gardens. I was going to park closer to take the railroad in to the city with my wife to see a show, we went down Greenway made a circle to get to Burns Street passing the front of the Christian Reading Room and made a U-turn behind 25 Burns Street to get one of the last parking spots on Burns so we could take the Railroad. What we saw was unreal and quite frankly SAD.Between the old Greenhouse and 25 Burns ( Garden Apts.) were about 20 kids about 13 to 18 years of age drinking, smoking pot , one girl had her pants down and was urinating in the middle of the parking lot, after we parked we walked down Burns and saw the signs for the LIRR covered with marker, the stop signs, the new garbage can on the steps of the historic station , and on top of the platform the restored windows were carved into the glass with Grafitti. We had a good show in the city and dinner, but I was disturbed to see the Gardens getting reduced everyday. P.S. to top it off when we drove home on Greenway South around the Leslie building we saw a broken car window. |

But in the last two weeks, I have had a VERY difficult time getting a digital signal in my apartment (71st Ave between 110th and 112th street) or within a 5 block radius of my apartment on the North side of Queens Blvd. I can get a Digital Signal in seconds in Rego Park, Corona, Flushing, Manhattan, Rockaway, Brooklyn, Staten Island, Long Island, and New Jersey. Verizon said it is my phone, but I'm sure it isn't. Why would I be able to get signals instantly in those other areas but NOT in Forest Hills. I'm wondering if other people have been having problems in the last couple of weeks. I'm tempted to go to T-Mobile since my Verizon contract expired in 11/03 and I haven't renewed it (thank goodness) but Verizon used to be a great company. Their customer service used to be excellent. Now, when I called them, they told me, "You are thinking of switching to T-Mobile, go right ahead!" |
